What You’ll Learn

  • Learn how to build stronger photographs by choosing where to stand, what to include and what to leave out. Your guide will help you recognise cleaner compositions, stronger lines and better balance within the frame.

  • Understand how to use aperture, shutter speed and ISO with more confidence. We’ll help you choose settings that suit the scene rather than relying on guesswork.

  • Develop your ability to notice the photographs that are easy to walk past — light, reflections, layers, details, gestures and moments that can turn an ordinary scene into something much stronger.

  • Whatever you’re shooting with, we’ll help you understand its strengths and get more from it. The aim is not to make you buy more equipment, but to help you use what you already have more creatively and confidently.

  • We’ll look at some of the photographs you’re making during the tour and discuss what’s working and what could be stronger. You can then apply that feedback immediately to the next photographs you take.

  • Absolutely. Our tours are tailored to your level of experience, whether you’re just getting started or have been photographing for many years.

    Your guide will adapt the tuition to you, helping with camera settings, composition, technique and recognising stronger photographic opportunities as the tour develops.

  • Absolutely. You don’t need a traditional camera to enjoy the tour.

    Modern iPhones are capable of excellent photography, and your guide can help you with composition, exposure, perspective, street photography and creative techniques using the camera you already carry.

    An iPhone user is considered a photographing guest, as you’ll receive photographic guidance and tuition throughout the tour.

  • Bring the camera and lenses you already enjoy using. DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, compact cameras and iPhones are all welcome.

    There’s no need to arrive with specialist equipment. Your guide will help you get the most from what you already have.

  • Yes — but we don’t stop there.

    Depending on the route and conditions, the tour can include classic Amsterdam subjects such as the Dancing Houses on the Damrak, Brouwersgracht, the Jordaan, historic canals, bridges and characteristic canal houses.

    We’ll also take you to less-obvious viewpoints and photographic locations that many visitors would be unlikely to discover on their own.

    The exact route remains flexible so your guide can respond to the light, weather, crowds and photographic opportunities on the day.

  • For the Day Photography Tour, a tripod is generally not necessary.

    Daylight allows you to photograph comfortably handheld, which also makes it easier to move around the city and react quickly to street scenes, bicycles and unexpected moments.

    If you particularly want to experiment with slower shutter speeds or long exposures, you’re welcome to bring one.

  • Our Day Photography Tours start at 10:00am.

    This gives you time to enjoy breakfast before meeting your guide while still giving us plenty of daylight to explore and photograph Amsterdam.

  • We meet outside Ibis Amsterdam Centre, next to Amsterdam Central Station. As you face the station, the hotel is on the left-hand side.

    When your booking is confirmed, we’ll send you the full address and a Google Maps location so it’s easy to find.

  • Amsterdam’s weather can be unpredictable, but prolonged torrential rain is relatively unusual. Rain often comes and goes, and changing weather can create excellent photographic opportunities — including wet-street reflections, softer light and atmospheric city scenes.

    We therefore try not to cancel tours simply because rain is forecast. Your guide will adapt the route and photography to the conditions wherever possible.

    If severe weather makes the tour genuinely impractical or unsafe, we’ll first try to rearrange your tour. If we have to cancel and another suitable time cannot be arranged, you’ll receive a full refund.

  • We strongly recommend booking in advance to give you the best chance of securing your preferred date and tour duration.

    Because Day Photography Tours normally start at 10:00am, bookings must be made no later than the day before the tour.

    Same-day bookings are not available for day tours.

  • Yes. Partners, friends and family members who simply want to enjoy the experience are very welcome.

    A reduced rate is available for non-photographing guests. If they would also like photographic tuition — including photography with an iPhone — they are considered a photographing guest.

  • Yes. Families are very welcome, and your guide can adapt the pace and experience depending on the children’s ages and interest in photography.

    Children who are actively photographing and receiving tuition are considered photographing guests. Family members simply accompanying you may qualify for the reduced non-photographing guest rate.

    If you’re travelling with younger children, contact us before booking and we’ll help you choose the most suitable tour length.

  • If you need to cancel, the following cancellation charges apply:

    More than 14 days before your tour: 25%
    7–14 days before your tour: 50%
    72 hours–7 days before your tour: 75%
    Less than 72 hours before your tour or no-show: 100%

    If your plans change, you may request one change of date with at least 72 hours’ notice, subject to guide availability.

    If Amsterdam Photo Safari has to cancel your tour and we cannot arrange a suitable alternative, you can choose a new date or receive a full refund.

    We recommend travel insurance to cover illness, flight disruption and other unexpected changes to your travel plans.

  • Our small-group Day Photography Tours are limited to a maximum of three photographers, giving everyone plenty of individual attention from the guide.

    A Private Photography Tour gives you the guide entirely to yourself or your own party, with greater flexibility over the starting time, route, pace, locations and photographic tuition.
